Flash Painting

I am in my last year of school for my BFA in Illustration. One of my classes is called Eccentric Illustration, the first assignment was to do something out side of our comfort zone. I like to do clean work so I desided to so something sloppy where I couldn’t get tight. I used an illustration board with thick gesso and sloppy acrylic background but still not too thick so I could get the rest of the paintig on there. I used Caran De Arche a water soluble paint crayon. It works like dry oil paint but activates with water. You can’t get too detailed unless you use a thin brush and they are too soft to sharpen to a point. You do alot of smuding and can block in areas with a moist brush to spread it out.
I used a cheesy tattoo design from some old flash I found. I used a burnt umber acrylic wash to freehand in the the basic shape and then went over it.
